After continuously patting himself on the back for the vaccine roll out and seemingly forgetting the ineptitude of the previous 12 months seems that Matt the Tw At has reverted to type

They will probably do a U-Turn and give the nurses a better pay rise and try to make themselves out to be the good guys. Again.

It’s not just the fact it’s politically naive it’s also morally and ethically redundant and says all we need to know about Tories and their mindset

Thing with nurses is it’s a broad discipline. Pay ranges from £80k for chief nurses to about £25k for entry level. I’d say the average is around £35k, so it isn’t great but not the pittance the media make out. A lot of nurses I work with do bank and agency on top of their regular shifts and that pushes their salary to I’d guess £40k. I’d look at upping the entry level pay grades, which really are too low.

Like I've said before; don't make nurses pay income tax - specifically the ones on lower pay grades.

They seem to have forgotten the slogan they painted on the side of the campaign bus for Brexit. We all know that times are tough, especially in the public sector but I doubt very much if anyone would begrudge the health carers a decent pay rise. They say that they can’t afford it. Cobblers. They find money when they want to. They just chose to find 1%.

I like this plan. Cover it with a tax rise for the super rich and you could be onto a winner!

The way to take people out of income tax, is to raise the threshold at which you start to pay.

The coalition govt did this at the insistence of the Lib Dem’s (their finest achievement imo) raising it from £6,500 to £10,000.

Sunak has just frozen it. Which incidentally doesn’t affect the very rich at all because once you earn over £125,000 you’re not entitled to it anyway.

You need to watch these sneaky bastards!

Historically this never lasts forever. Eventually the penny drops and working people realise whose nest those in power are really feathering.

The billions (billions££££££) casually spunked away on failed projects run by Tory party friends compared to what they are prepared to begrudgingly pay to people actually working for a living is unbelievable. (So Bad there must be a case for a Covid ‚windfall‘ tax on the greedy f*ckers who have profited from all this - because the money has gone somewhere).

But for the moment, the turkeys will keep voting for Christmas.

An opposition party with a leader who isn’t so dull, and with a clear and simple account of what they would do differently would help.

We surely all know the difference between spending on capital and revenue. It’s easier for gov departments to spend on one off contracts than pay increases that will have impacts for decades. As my comment above, it’s a complex issue healthcare pay but the media would have you believe it’s so simple. Another illustration of this complexity, if you significantly raised nurse pay, of band 6 (who is relatively junior) would be earning more than many specialist trainee doctors.

Nurses generally do a great job but there are 1.1 million of them.
Think the government are mad not to offer more and no doubt they will. They deserve a pay raise but not with the generosity of some on here. With average pay of around £33k, 12.5% would cost about £5B.

There is an issue about health carers but also about the low paid in general. To help them the starting point of paying tax should have been raised.

Apparently most NHS staff get annual increases due to progression in their pay band on top of any national pay review. So I'm reading that despite the headline of 1% NHS increase between 2012 and 2017 pay actually went up by an average 2.7% a year! Something the unions aren't talking about.

What is a fair increase is beyond difficult to say.

Most public sector workers get an annual ‘spinal point’ increase. It’s the only real perk you get in the public sector and encourages loyalty. But once you reach the top of your grade as a nurse or civil servant you either have to retrain to a higher band or take the 1% or whatever.

The NHS have had to our a shift in for the first time in decades and isn’t boo hoo f__king hoo.

The country’s finances are in the sh1tter so no/one gets a pay rise.

Too. Bad.

If someone has to pay, make the fat and the old pay as they’re the ones we’ve had to protect. Fair enough, no?’

No. Yes, that's right.
