Johnson's tackle....Liverpool 21:59 - Jan 11 with 5365 views | QPR1882 | Thats why fans and players/managers get so pissed off. Johnson plays for the next 3/4 games Kompany misses the next 4 games ( + 80 mins of the Manchester derby ). Who wins titles/cups seems more down to refs then players now days.

Johnson's tackle....Liverpool on 15:27 - Jan 12 by SurreyHoop | Beautiful. See my point. How good would it be to see the likes of Rooney etc. subjected to that style of refereeing in that culture and not back chatting the ref and throwing dummies out of the pram which lets not forget, wastes time as well. They just need to know that the decision the ref makes is final and get on with it. |
Agreed. When you watch players like Cashley swearing his head off at the ref everytime he's penalised for a challenge it makes you wonder why the ref puts up with it. Stupid thing is it wouldn't be difficult to stamp out.

Johnson's tackle....Liverpool on 15:20 - Jan 12 by SurreyHoop | A situation where 2 players squared up to each other by putting their heads close up to each others faces. No head butt motion took place. Bradley Johnson over reacts which is unsporting behaviour in my opinion and should have been cautioned with a yellow card. Barton is also guilty of unsporting behaviour and should have been given a yellow at the most. Barton wasn't guilty of serious foul play or violent conduct on this occasion. He was perhaps only guilty of being naive and stupid for giving the referee an opportunity to apply an interpretation of the games rules, which, given his reputation runs the risk of an over reaction from opposing players and misinterpretation from referees as happened in this incident. |
agree with that assessment. what i can't understand is why, when he seemed to be looking right at the incident, he let the game carry on when surely he would be aware that having let us carry on in possession any retrospective action would be seen as bad refereeing. it would be more prudent you would think, for his reputation, to let that incident go (as he seemed to ignore the other incidents in the run up) but instead he gives the red card and puts himself in the line of fire for a load of stick for the decision he did make - same with the linesman.

Absolutely. I just don't understand why this sort of behaviour is tolerated. It's also become the norm at kids/school level of football because they've seen high profile players on TV doing it. I'm not saying it would be easy to curb but once players know they will be penalised every time for back-chatting/ swearing at officials then it would soon stop and make the game a more pleasurable and faster (time wasted spent arguing) one to watch.

If a ref spoke to Rooney like that I think his new hair would fall out in shock. I'd love to see football refs being a bit more like rugby refs and taking these puffed up primadonas down a peg or two - hysterical! By the way I also thought that both Kompany's and Johnson's were perfectly good challenges. Just because a player goes in studs up (which is the current refereeing and media obsession) doesn't mean he should be booked or sent off if there's no opposition player within 2 yards of him! Let's try and apply some of that oh-so-rare-commodity......common sense.

you are right commonsense is in such short supply in the modern game - there is a happy medium somewhere between the leg breaking challenges of the old days and the namby pamby gymnastic/ballet of today's game [Post edited 1 Jan 1970 1:00]

Johnson's tackle....Liverpool on 20:02 - Jan 12 with 668 views | derbyhoop | I didn't see it in real time but have seen it since and I think Johnson's tackle could easily be a red card offence. He is off the ground and out of control. OK he gets the ball, but if Lescott had been 2 feet closer, it would have broken his leg. Kompany's tackle, on the other hand, was hard and fair, IMHO. As to Rugby refereeing, they are continually talking to the players and explaining their decisions. Yes, it's a more complex game, but they don't stand for any crap and the players don't give them much. If a decision goes against you and you show dissent, it gets moved another 10 yards down the field. The ref can keep doing that but doesn't normally have to.

Rugby referees seem to be constantly telling the players what to do: 'Don't do that or you'll be off-side, don't do that or you'll be penalised. Crouch, hold engage etc.' I have surmised that no-one playing the game actually understands the rules.

Can't have it both ways....... Kompany gets sent off because the argument is if he caught the player he would have broken his leg. Johnson stays on because the argument is he never caught the player. ffs

In rugby for such things they also have the 10 metere rule which means arguing with the referee can see you lose ground including yellow cards which guves you 10 mins in the bin. It's not perfect however and there definetly are some troubles in Rugby refereeing in my opinion and a ref can have even more influence on a result than they can in football.

I'm a big fan of the 10 metre rule in rugby and would love to see it applied in football as the norm (wasn't it trialled once in a league in England?). Think it would be a great tool to stamp out dissent/petulance/tantrums! Players would soon realise the need to keep their traps shut about refereeing decisions then.
