A Pompey fan on Twitter labelled him a ‘loose cannon,’ and that seems to have been the general consensus - a good player but far too erratic and made a lot of mistakes.

And yet, after Cannon had posted one of those all-too-familiar "Thanks for everything" tweets yesterday, he was greeted with nothing but praise and positivity from virtually every Pompey fan who responded.

Dalian has a love in with him and also the fact I thought he was garbage when he was with us.

I also don’t think he’s a solid lower league centre half. He’s more in the average to poor category for me. If we had the option to sign an experienced centre half like character like Wheater I’d rather we did that.

Now I’m not saying he’s in Michael Simpkins league, he’s not awful. He’s just not as good as some people like to remember.

Would love to know what this obsession is that people have with David Wheater.

Tangled up in blue.

Someone referred to McGahey as a solid lower league centre half. He isn’t. However I would describe Wheater as one. That’s the only reason I referred to him, as he is a name that has cropped up countless times before.

I’d be delighted if we were to sign players of the quality of McGahey ahead of next season.

I would absolutely love for you to explain what qualities those out? I’m not even being sarcastic I’d just love to know what exactly about McGahey was quality.

Yeah, at least with Peter Clarke he’s had a proven career in the bottom divisions. Bar a couple of short loans 15 years ago, Wheater had a season in league one when Bolton won promotion and a pandemic shortened campaign in L2. He’s 34 too.

Never got it, though his comedy defending for Steven Davies’ winner against them in 16/17 stood out.

McGahey was criminally overrated because he had a bit of pace about him, which still didn’t get him out of many notable situations.

He was positionally woeful & weak in the air.

Still don’t understand your love in with him.

This exchange is about your ludicrous dismissal of him after watching him for two minutes on (or close to) his debut

He went on to make 99 appearances for us, mainly in the top half of L1

Shun's "solid lower league central defender" assessment is pretty much on the money and nowhere near the farcical "love-in" that you assume but keep it coming; you're endearing yourself to the usual axe-grinders...

Absolute tosh. Wheater was on a ridiculous wage for L2 at Oldham, and is widely rumoured to have fallen out with Management and fellow players, plus was bang average when in the team.

Exactly what we don't want.

Explain your obsession with him please?

I'll hsve a go,
He is 6 feet 5 inches tall and will win a lot of crosses that others dojt.
He was 34 in February so not too old for a centre half in L2 with lots of young legs around him
He has played around 100 premiership games and around 200 championship games
He scored 9 goals when Bolton we in L1
2 years ago he played 33 championship games for Bolton
He was in the England squad in 2008 as a replacement of John Terry.
The guy is a decent footballer and had we signed him on a game to game basis when he fell out with oldham we would probably now still be in L1
Is there another season in L1 in him, I would say so, he doesnt seem to be particularly injury prone, he has the sort of experience that we got from McShane on too few occeasions.
If the price was right, would I sign him for next season? Yes.

I don’t think anybody on here thinks he’s a world beater but, based on his time with us, he is more than good enough for League 2. There’s little point listing the qualities I think he would bring as your mind is made up.

My point was more that I fully expect us to be picking up scraps at the end of the transfer window like we did last summer. I’d be surprised if we signed anybody with as decent a pedigree as McGahey unless they’re past their best and on a big wage (Wheater anyone?).

Rhys Bennett has apparently turned down a contract offer at Carlisle Utd, it was described as poor and a lot less then the short-term one he signed in January.

I would have him back at the Dale.

Had a quick Google to see what Oldham fans thought of him and here are a few comments from the following thread: https://www.owtb.co.uk/topic/52472-wheater/page/2/

"Probably the most disappointing signing of recent years. Obviously he has been treated awfully by the club, but God he was shit last season."

"Comparing 3 games to 37 isn't possible and then bending those stats to include games where Wheater played but we conceded when he wasn't on the pitch to make his stats seem better is hilarious. Are those games ones where he was an absolute idiot and got himself sent off? Wheater was shite, nowhere near what everyone hoped and now he isn't playing all those who were saying the same have him down as the saviour."

"Oldham had the second worst defence in League 2 last season, and he played all but 3 games. He was bad."

"He was crap. I'm not denying he was treated abhorrently by the club, but I'm also not going to pretend he was the solution to all our problems when what we saw last season suggests otherwise."

"Very underwhelmed by his signing and whether his heart was ever in it or not he was in no way the experienced polished pro I thought we had signed and even at 37 would have taken Clarkey all day long."

"Great signing that was a big let down on the pitch for us."

For me, it seems to be one of those where because he played in the Premier League and was in an England squad, a few people recognise his name so assume he'd be great. But he's now 34, has spent the last two seasons in L2, and won't have played a competitive game for almost 18 months by the time new season starts while picking up £4k a week in the process. And by the sounds of it, wasn't even very good when he did play in L2!

Tangled up in blue.

Again Bennett would feel like a step backwards I'd rather see us bring in a new young player that has fallen out of the Prem/champ youth systems. Would be cheaper and potentially better quality. Obviously depending on the released list we might need some experience bringing in whether Bennett would be suitable as an experienced player I'm not sure as when he left us he was reasonably experienced in terms of games but was still very naive in the way he played.

Bennett was played at right back, defensive midfield and occasionally centre back when he was here. He did a decent job when called upon, despite being in and out of the side.

Since then he’s gone on to be a solid centre back at Mansfield, Posh and Carlisle.

I’d have him back in a heartbeat but I fear he’ll be out of our range wages wise anyway.

Exactly if we sign players like Bennett we're happy with League 2 status. He's become established with Mansfield and Carlisle. After last season and all the negativity we have to start seeing some ambition from the club. Rhys isn't that for me.

This is why relegation was catastrophic for us. There is no way on earth, unless someone invests a ton of cash into the first-team squad, that we can have an attitude like that.

We have fallen back to a level where we were never a big fish in the first place. Securing players such as Bennett would be us doing well, in my opinion.
