75:1 is one too many, it upsets the entire balance. Especially when we're also destroying the parts of ecosystems that could mitigate our impacts.
Nature can and does destroy itself. When was the last time you saw a wooly mamoth strolling around the Gower? But nature also recovers over a few 100,000 years.
The problem is we're tipping the balance far quicker than nature ever has or will, and unless we stop the recovery won't happen. |

Absolutely.
The easiest way to think about sustainability is if we can carry on doing that particular activity forever, and I do mean forever, or not.
Can we carry on catching fish quicker than they can be replaced?
Can we carry on chopping down rainforests for agricultural land?
Can we carry on emitting greenhouse gases?
The answer to all of those questions is no, but doing something about it is going to need us to make some sacrifices. | | | |

You're right. Which, in turn, impacts the ocean as a Co2 sink too. Which is why a small addition to the cycle is a problem.
Water vapour is a greenhouse gas but doesn't last particularly long in the atmosphere and we don't add more to the system (edit, directly I mean although warming does in itself) .
Everyone dwells on Co2, including the skeptics, because its the most obvious one and the most inconvenient to do something about. We also need to think about methane and nitrous oxide. [Post edited 14 Aug 2022 18:24]

Extinction events historically are usually caused by a sudden catastrophe. Whether it’s a meteor or volcanic/seismic activity etc. The probability of that sort of thing happening soon is low. The biggest danger for an extinction event in the nearby future would be a war involving nuclear warheads which doesn’t feel too far away right now. | |

Tell that to worlds biggest polluters, the UK could ban everything the scientists say is a cause of climate change, and it wouldn't make a blind bit of difference.

No they're not, they occur over thousands of years, even the Cretaceous / Tertiary extinction took thousands of years to develop. That was caused by a sudden event (a massive meteor hitting the earth).
Most are caused by a change in climate over thousands of years, we're accelerating that process in to 100's of years.
We are experiencing the largest loss in biodiversity ever seen in geological history (Pro rata) over a 100 or so year period. This is a mass extinction event.
Today it appears that the Dugong has been confirmed extinct as a result of pollution, hunting and loss of habitat. The problem is that habitat is sea grass which absorbs massive quantities of Co2 for its mass.
