Goalscoring 12:05 - Jan 5 with 661 views

In the top four divisions of English football only one player (Haaland) has scored fifteen or more goals so far this season. In the entirety of last season across the top four divisions, only seven players managed to score 20 or more, five of whom were in the Premier League.

Is this a sign of poorer quality strikers or just the ongoing rise of tedious play driven by tactical systems instead of playing ability?

In fairness wingers everywhere seem to be coached not to take players on, but to play it back inside or cut in if they can. The old art of hitting the touchline and crossing seems to be reserved for overlapping fullbacks these days.

It's a subject that stuck with me a bit when I started doing some digging after the insistence that we "need a 20 goal striker" became a bit deafening in the Summer. Like you say, the days when forwards were the focal point of attacking play and service seem to have come to an end.

Vipotnik is doing about as well as we could possibly be asking him to so far this season. We do need others to chip in more.

Or are defenders getting better particularly at the "dark arts". I'm convinced some of the penalty area fouling, shirt pulling and basically rugby tackling specifically at set plays would not have been allowed in the past. Stamp that out and there would be more goals.

People are asking for 20 goal strikers because we’re kind of used to having a talisman scoring that kind of amount.

Then we had two poor seasons with Lowe and Cullen getting 9 and 11 respectively. Vipotnik looks there or thereabouts on course for this season.

I haven’t looked further back, but I’d imagine Michu, Bony and Scotland were in that ballpark.

I’d much rather have our top scorer getting modest numbers, but four or five other players chipping in with respectable goal tallies. We have to get better at sharing the burden.

Very good point if you pull or wrestle a player anywhere else on the pitch they flop about like they’re made of wet cardboard and a foul is given but in the box at corners refs allow what amounts to all in wrestling to take place it’s ludicrous

I dunno. There were some serious practitioners of the defensive dark arts in years gone by.

For me it's still mostly tactical. Mordern philosophy tends towards an "all team" possession approach. If you've got a striker who can still bang in 20 goals despite all that you've got a rare one.

Arsenal don't have a player past five league goals this season yet they're still the second highest scorers in the PL.

Are there less goals overall? Are we seeing more goals being spread across the team with Midfielders and even defenders becoming more supportive in their attacking duties and chipping in goals?

How many of those goals last season were penalties? And are we seeing a reduction in those this year?

I would question the coaching out of players natural skills or ones they learnt at a young age then refined, skills tempered to such a degree to fit into a team that you lose the very thing that made them stand out instead of encouraging them. All for learning new skills but not restricting players to such a degree that opposition players know what they are going to do and can counter them very easily.
I think a bit of inventiveness or positivity can spread through a team and breed confidence in one's ability to the benefit of the team.
We all feared the worst against Man City but within the first 20 minutes we had opened them up, shame that the fear to play positive football with an eye to keep defensively sound doesn't seem to be encouraged.
