Does anyone on here remember him playing in goal for Dale in the 1960s? I think he moved to Leicester City from Spotland.
I’m asking as his grandson Joe Heyes now plays international Rugby Union for England.

I think it was late 1950s when he played for dale. I think he might have played at spotland for barrow later in his career. I am not at home at present so cannot check my records.

I remember him playing against Dale for Barrow. I was stood next to Colin Smith-Markl at that game who remembered the name.
The late 1950s were a bit early for me but my grandad used to mention a keeper called Jimmy Jones from that era.

He only just played for Dale in the 1960s.

Four appearances in 1958/59
Twenty appearances from Jan-Apr 1960

24 appearances in total, 40 goals conceded, 7 clean sheets.

Later played for Leicester, Swansea, Barrow, Bedford and Hereford.

I'm not a maestro, far from it, but I just engage my brain before posting.

He joined Dale in January 1960 replacing Jimmy Jones for the final 20 games that season. He was only 22 at that stage of his career and joined Leicester in the close season.

I recall him being a good shot-stopper and was slightly smaller than the average keeper .
Playing behind Milburn, Aspden and Bodell, he was well supported.

I can`t remember how he went on after Leicester.

Thanks everyone.
Presumably Dale got a transfer fee when he moved to Leicester who were a decent top flight team at the time?
Bit of a thankless role being understudy to Gordon Banks though!

From Steven Phillipps' books:

George Heyes 1956-60
Born: Bolton 16.11.37 5’10” 11st
Goalkeeper
FL Apps 24 Total Apps 25
Career: (Bolton junior football), Dale 6.56 [24], Leicester C. 7.60 £7000 [25], Swansea T. 9.65 [98], Barrow 7.69 [26], Hereford U. cs.70, Bedford T. 8.70 to 1971. Goalkeeping scout for Blackburn R., Aston Villa, Leicester C., Nottingham F.
Honours: Welsh Cup winners 1966, final 1969

George made his Dale debut in a friendly against Walsall in December 1957, but his FL debut came the following September, when he had the misfortune to fumble Southend’s goal over the line. Left out after a 6-1 defeat at Bury a couple of week’s later and also doing his national service, he eventually gained a regular spot in goal when Jimmy Jones was out of action in the second half of 1959-60. Snapped up by Leicester that summer for a decent fee, he spent five years at Filbert Street as Gordon Banks’ understudy before the emergence of Peter Shilton. Despite letting in 12 goals in his first two away games for Swansea, due to the timing of his transfer, he had the unusual record of playing 48 FL games in 1965-66. While with the Swans he played in two Welsh Cup Finals and appeared in the European Cup Winners Cup. Trained as a telephone engineer, he worked for BT after retiring from semi-pro football and later owned his own company. He also acted as a specialist scout for goalkeepers for several league clubs.

Wow!

Thanks for that. The fee was interesting. In those days £7k was a tidy sum for Dale.
