Incredibly sad news breaking in Spain - Tenerife player Jesus de Miguel has passed away after an on-pitch collision with an opposition goalkeeper a few days ago.

Tenerife striker, I think. Either way it’s a shocking story. Immediately brought flashbacks to the terrible Harald Schumacher/Patrick Battiston incident in the 1982 World Cup semi-final.

Thoughts are with the friends, family and teammates of Jesús de Miguel (the Andorra keeper too, IMO, who could never have envisaged such a tragic outcome).

Schumacher I think knew what he was doing.

I saw the clip of the incident yesterday - keeper made a strong challenge but don't think he could have envisaged what would have happened.

Tragic news. RIP.

RIP.

Awful challenge by the keeper, but we see more vindictive challenges every week.

As mentioned above you have to feel for the keeper as well, haven’t seen the challenge yet so can’t comment on that part.

Horrific. Just shows how reckless tackles can not just end careers they can end lives. Not that the keeper ever intended this but completely reckless. Similar to Schumacher's dreadful challenge on Battiston years ago.

Never knowingly right.

Awful.

Young daughter too.

Do feel for the keeper as well, a very bad tackle, but never in a million years is it going through his head that this might happen. A very hard thing to live with.

I've seen the challenge. It was incredibly reckless.

The Tenerife striker is in the centre circle and turns to chase a through ball and runs straight into the opposition keeper who knees him in the chest.

The striker goes down and seems to go into cardiac arrest while he's on the ground.

I'm sure the keeper feels terrible about it but if that happened anywhere other than a football pitch he would be looking at criminal charges.

For my money it's worse than that challenge by the Millwall keeper on Mateta in the cup a couple of years ago. Probably not as bad as the Schumacher challenge but only because Schumacher knew what he was doing whereas the keeper here didn't seem to be thinking at all.

I wouldn't be surprised if the goalie gives up the game. It's a horrible challenge but the tragedy that unfolded must be so hard to bear.

I'm not going to re-watch the incident, which was shown on BBC News earlier, and that means I could be wrong, but while the goalkeeper was reckless, collisions like this happen a lot and my immediate reaction was that it wasn't anything like the Schumacher assault of Battiston. I also have sympathy for the goalkeeper, who has to live with the tragic outcome.

Suffering since 1978.

I'm not trying to demonise the bloke, but......

1. Running at someone and sticking your knee in their chest is not a run of the mill collision

2. The keeper walks straight off without checking on the player he flattened

3. If you do rewatch the clip you will see that as the keeper is walking off the pitch one of his teammates runs across to low-five him (before they all realise how serious it is!)

If it does end up in court that will take a lot of explaining

No dealing with anything here, simply very bad taste.

Secondly Boston has form for this already, he made an equally poor taste comment in TwoHalves RIP Dexter Wansel thread;

''Dexter Wansel RIP on 13:29 - Jun 3 with 2341 views Boston

So, Dexter Wansel RIP, isn't a fourth tier Austrian football club.''

The Harald Schumacher/Patrick Battiston incident came straight to my mind as well. As others have said the difference is Schumacher knew what he was doing whereas the actions of the FC Andorra keeper appears to be sheer incompetence.

Rest In Peace Jesus de Miguel. Good to see that respect is being shown before all the European matches this week.

Fun idea: let's not make the thread about all that.

Anyway, obviously shocking stuff here. I've watched a lot of MMA and I've seen deliberate flying knees knock fighters out cold but no-one has died. Only the keeper will know if he put a bit extra on that challenge but he's very unlucky to have killed the player.

I don't know how you come back from that.

How awful though. :(

No matter how reckless and mad the tackle by goalkeeper Owono was, he obviously didn't intend to seriously injure Miguel, let alone kill him.

However, watched some footage of how he was behaving earlier in the game and he was out of control. After Tenerife conceded a penalty he ran the length of the pitch to have it out with the oppo keeper Martin who was in a a scuffle with the scorer, both of whom were sent off. He could've joined them as he spent the next minutes in a slanging match with the Tenerife keeper as he walked off.

That was in the 83rd minute.

Then when Andorra scored their equaliser in the 88th he was running from his goal to give loads to the bench.

Nine minutes later he makes that insane tackle on halfway, knee to chest.

We've all played games when we get a bit caught up in it all. That's what this looks like. Feel as sorry for him, nearly, as Jesus de Miguel's family. Owono will never get over this. Fifteen minute headloss that will define him. It's a lot.
