If you look at the statistics around rape it's horrendous really, 71,000 rapes reported every year & only 6% reaching prosecution (data: Rape Crisis).
Rape Crisis figures are just England and Wales, not UK. They estimate that only 15% of rapes are reported. So the actual annual figure is around 477,000 rapes. Of those, the number of convicted rapists (63% of those that get to court, CPS data) the figure is ~2,600.
From rape, to reporting, to prosecution, to conviction, the proportion of rapists being convicted is 0.55%.
So the proportion of rape victims not seeing justice: 99.5%.
I think we can all agree that's a disgrace and shows how incompetent the system is in regards this crime.

Yes sure, but only if he did it and it's proven, which I guess the jury would say it is. It's a minefield. Didn't Dave Jones get accused of the same thing but it was a lie? I've no doubt Russel Brand did it, but what we think of a person shouldn't decide whether they have done it or not. There should be categorical evidence and certainty that he did it. I assume the jury would say they were certain. I would have to view the evidence, as I don't know. The evidence could be compelling, I don't know but I am just repsonding to Nick mentioning that if it is one word against the other, how can it be certain as the case with Dave Jones, people do lie?
CCTV, witnesses, text messages, online activity is actual proof. People saying one word against another is not. But maybe there is evidence I haven't seen. Convicting people who have committed awful crimes is positive, but we need a system that is certain that they have got it right.
The statistics are also an indication of how difficult this type of crime is to prove. The Henry Nowak killer,.with bodycam footage and his finger prints all over the murder weapon is 100 per cent proof, peoples words arn't which is what I think is the debate here. [Post edited 6 Nov 18:11]
