The election results thread 19:10 - Jun 8 with 54582 viewsexiledclaseboy

Polls close 10pm. BBC, ITV and SKY release the results of their joint exit poll also at 10pm. Some of you may remember election night two years ago when the exit poll predicted a Tory win. It was roundly ridiculed by politicians of all parties and most us on here. You could see Professor John Curtice (who oversees the poll) visibly wilting and wondering if he'd just wrecked his career and reputation. The same Prof Curtice got progressively more smug as the night rolled on and it turned out his poll was more or less spot on.

First result due about 11pm. From Sunderland.

The outcome may be a foregone conclusion but it should be exciting for about an hour or so.

Get it stickied for 24 hours or so please, mods.

Oh, and can someone keep Perch and Bluey away from sharp objects please. Just in case.

I'm not necessarily referring to your average MP. I'm more thinking about cabinet members, people in actual positions of power. For example, Blair taking us to war in 2003. How much is he worth now? Very richly rewarded. F*cker should be washing his hands like Lady Macbeth every night.

Average MPs/backbenchers are chairs of standing and select committees. Cabinet reshuffles happen every year or two (you're about to see another). And the future of Brexit is about to be decided by 10 non-cabinet northern Irish MPs.

Friend just texted me a link to an interview between Andrew Marr and John McDonnell.

Marr asks if Labour lost the election, would he and Corbyn resign?

McDonnell replied (paraphrasing) "Yes, it's inevitable if you lose an election".

Well, Labour lost... so Uber for Corbyn and McDonnell then.

Ten Northern Irish MPs who believe men and dinosaurs coexisted 6000 years ago. And like terrorism.

Didn't "lose" in the traditional sense though did they old son? Increased seat numbers when everyone expected huge losses and highest vote percentage in 20 years. And deprived the Tories not only of the landslide they were expecting but actually deprived them of their existing majority.

The 2 advisors that just resigned, does anybody know whether they were Government employees (i.e funded by the taxpayer) or Conservative party employees ?

Proud to have been one of the 231

If the Tories used sophistry like that, you'd have at them you little tinker.

Labour lost the election. They failed to win.

Not at all, I'm just trying to point out the intricacies of the situation May has managed to land herself and the rest of us in for no apparent reason. The Tories "won" the election by most traditional metrics but as I said to Lisa yesterday, ask them how much they feel like winners. Talk of winners and losers is way too reductive for the current political situation.

Oh definitely. Everyone lost realistically, Labour just lost by less than expected.

Still lost though... so I guess McDonnall as a person of honour will be quitting...

I'd have a wager with you that 'the west' will be at war with Iran within 3-5 years time. Doesn't matter who's at the helm, the war machine will keep turning.

I hope she does...

In reality, she's now in hock to the cabinet so hopefully things will improve.

The point was, McDonnell clearly stated Corbyn and he would have to resign if they lost the election...

You expect McDonnell to think anything through?

Of course he and Corbyn shouldn't resign. They performed above expectation in the light of a poor Tory campaign. Voters seeing that would be entitled to question his integrity and common sense mind.

Respectfully, it was a bit pointless writing to your MP about Syria then....
