Saints Legend. 108 goals in 189 games for The Saints. RIP Martin .

Poll: Would you take an Fa Cup win if it meant relegation to the championship ?

Saw him a few times in from 65/66 season until he left for Spurs, then for England and against us for Spurs and Norwich

Shame his time at Saints is almost forgotten in the tributes I’ve seen so far

RIP Martin, without him I doubt we would have got promoted to top league for first time in 65/66.

Yes I noticed. Most of the tributes don’t even mention his time with us even though he was a prolific scorer for us .

I stand to be corrected but I remember Chivers and Ron Davies playing a season or two together but they were a bit too similar and Ted Bates sold Chivers to Spurs.

That gave an up and coming leggy kid from the youth team the chance to jump in as Davies' co-striker...step forward one Mick Channon...decent replacement.

Sad News
Great player for Saints, scored nearly 100 goals for Saints.
Scored a lot of goals supplied from the wings by Paine and Sydenham
Left for Spurs when Channon was coming through, for a then record fee of £125,000.
He was rock solid,I didn't see anyone knock him off the ball, great player who played for England a few times.

RIP Martin,thanks for the memories.

If my Memory serves me right,Davies,Channon and Chivers did play a game together.
I think it was Chivers last game before going to Spurs

Boy could we do with a player like anyone of those three now.

Rock solid is right!

I remember him nonchalantly knocking the barrel-chested Dave Mackay off the ball at the Dell; rumour has it that, as a consequence Mackay told Bill Nicholson that he simply had to sign him.

Unfortunately, I think we got lumbered with Frank Saul in part exchange.

Almost as bad as when we sold Shearer and Branfoot bought Speedie and Dixon as replacements.

I gotta say that 66/67 team in our first division debut year, is etched on my late teens memory.

Chivers, Davies Channon Paine and Sydenham..all already name checked on the thread.

Not forgetting..

A scary tough defence...Knapp, Webb, Watson, Hollywood and Huxford (ouch!)

Creativity....Wimshurst, Fisher

Oh..last and definitely last, Jimmy Melia..never knowingly passed to anyone wearing the same coloured shirt as him.

Sad to hear this news. An important player with his dominant, physical presence and goals during Saints promotion to the top flight for the first time, a boyhood hero.
Sold him to Spurs for an absolute fortune, not a bad return at the time for a lad from Millbrook.
Wish we had someone like him up front these days.

My memory is probably as bad as your’s but fairly certain that some of those names mentioned played later.

Never saw him playing live for Saints, too young, but saw him age 11 playing and scoring for England in 1973 at Wembley when Chiv and Mick scored.

They both played in the shit-show WC qualifier that year vs Poland which condemned us to a DNQ for the finals in Germany

Jimmy Melia, the Jack Stephens of his day with always getting stick! Renowned now for that Brighton FA Cup final

I watched Saints being thrashed 5-1 at home by bottom club Blackpool in that first season in the top flight. Midfield was bossed by a certain hard cased little Scot named Hughie Fisher.
Ted Bates signed him soon after.

The famous commentator quote from that game.."And Smith must score"

He missed, but the quote was used as the title of the main Brighton fanzine for years after.

Time for my cocoa and bed I hear the forum say.

Before my time but my dad and grandad saw him play and I have happy memories of them both telling stories about those times in the long car journeys down to The Dell

One of a select few players who scored more than 100 goals for Saints
