It is difficult to see where we are going to get a win from and to date we have been a little fortunate that those immediately above us have not pulled away. But, as you say, that gap is starting to look wider now.

Villa have not won for a while and have not been scoring goals recently but you just know that they will break that drought against us on Saturday.

There have been some aspects of our play and some individual performances that have given me a little bit of hope recently but we need much more than a little bit of hope and some individual performances. We need the whole team to click and some VAR decisions that go in our favour for a change.

Every football fan knows we are going down and will finish bottom .

The challenge is can we get more than 11 points?

A few games ago is have said no but the unexpected point last Friday has now made me more hopeful that we will and won’t go down as the worst team in top flight history.

Lose this evening and because Everton play Wolves there is no combination of their result which will not leave us 7 points adrift let alone 6.

Donating last gasp home points to Ipswich and Leicester together with Archers penalty miss against a very poor Man Utd when we led one nil, beginning to look terminal I’m afraid.

Individual results apart, with Sports Republic assembly of a very poor squad and Russell Martin’s bizarre team selection, tactics and substitutions the writing was on the wall during the weekend the clocks went back.

Not changing the manager during the international break was ridiculous, the writings on the wall now.

Sports Republic seem to have taken a laissez-faire approach to Russell Martin so far, I can't see that changing at all this season. RM has said a few times now he thinks the results are just around the corner. I don't have that optimism myself.
It's SR's trainset, they don't seem to care, not a lot we can do about it. I just wish they'd come out and say what the vision is here.

To be fair we were always going to struggle and even after the playoff final, most of us knew that RM’s preferred approach would not bode well in the PL with ‘our’ level of playing staff. Whilst I said Rylan fully deserved a good crack at the season, hand on heart I was hopeful he would have left the building by now. The squad does have limited abilities, but I still maintain that had we a manager with a bit more ‘nous’ we would not be adrift to the level we are at present, and would certainly have meant the Derby record was not remotely possible. I still think we can surpass the record low points, but it’s gonna be a tight call.

We were down in August after the window closed.

No one genuinely thinks we have any chance of staying up do they?

Yes, I do. That's not to say it will happen and it certainly won't with RM still in charge, but it could if we get rid of him. We are currently 6 points from safety with 75 points still available.

If we keep RM through to January then it's probably too late by then, but if we acted today and sacked RM, brought in a new manager quickly, and bought a centre forward in January, then yes it could be done.

The glimpses of the team we see when we temporarily ditch RM's tactics show that there is potential in this squad. If we dig out results like at Brighton, stop the suicidal tippy tappy and counter attack with pace, then we could survive.

This is right. Because the quality in the bottom quarter of the PL is generally not great, it doesn't take that much to avoid relegation.

At the moment, it would take more than we've got but that can change quickly and there is still along way to go.

No points from the next two games could/should signal the end of the RM experiment.

We have to beat the teams around us.
We drew with Ipswich and lost to Wolves and Leicester.

Playing well against Arsenal, Liverpool and Brighton mean nothing.
Getting points on the board is what counts.

But then just blame VAR when a decision goes against us.

We thought that we had the answers, It was the questions we had wrong.

I admire your optimism Ifonly. However, the statistics for points required to avoid relegation are unfortunately against you:-

1. It’s generally accepted that to survive a club needs 40 points or above.

2. The lowest total to survive was 34 by West Brom.

If we got lucky and number 2.were to apply we need 29 of the available points. Number 1. and it’s 35 which is nearly half of the total points on offer.

Neither are impossible I agree, just very unlikely which is why some bookies have us at 1/8 for the drop.

As for ditching Martin, Sports Republic show no interest whatsoever in so doing and they haven’t purchased a centre forward ( other than sick note Stewart ) since they have been in charge. I just can’t see them spending money in the window given that it’s now pretty certain that The Championship awaits us next August.

In any event enjoy this evening’s game.

Players will lift their game against better teams in order to cement their next move. It was exactly the same last time we went down, playing well against the likes of Chelsea, Arsenal and United - when it truly counts we falter.
