"By far the most challenging season of my career!” 09:21 - Mar 16 with 19917 views | TK1 | Saw this on the way to the game, Cifuentes describing how difficult the season's been, "not just the results", but "things the fans don't see" - particularly the last few weeks. Interesting that he thinks this has been "by far" harder than taking over one of the worst teams I can remember last season. Seems significant. I wonder what's been happening - and I wonder where that leaves him for next season.

"By far the most challenging season of my career!” on 17:24 - Mar 16 by BrianMcCarthy | Or maybe he just likes a whinge? Who knows? Either way, not sure I like it when a manager says stuff like this. It could be construed as washing the club's dirty linen in public. The point here is that we don't know what he is saying, why he is saying it, and if we did we would know if he was correct. We only know what certain people tell us. We'll know the truth in our family, but only in time. |
He doesn't like a whinge though, does he? We do know that, we have the evidence of almost all his interviews I can think of. He's been largely uncomplaining throughout his time here, despite all kinds of adversity. He never really makes excuses and his mentality is always really forward-facing and supportive of his players. Here he is simply saying this has been by far the hardest season of his career - he'd know. And he adds that it's not just about results. Anybody who's watched us regularly this season knows there's something wrong at the club, at a sporting level. At the very least, this is arguably the least well-balanced squad we've had since being relegated a decade ago. And we know who always takes the credit publicly for every signing. Fundamentally, I disagree. I want them to air their dirty laundry. This is our club. I want to know what's happening. Because they'll be gone soon enough and we'll be left with the mess once more, wondering how it's happened under noses again.

That's a great post, TK1. I agree about the first paragraph, broadly at least. He has after all mentioned a few times that the club knows what he needs/wants etc. I agree completely about the recruitment under Nourry. I think it's been shocking and have thought so since last Summer. I do, disagree, about airing the dirty laundry. It never helps. Ever. We always find out in the end, so no need to break the omerta mid-season (if, indeed, this is what he is doing).

The last para here, I can't wrap my head around a good answer. I want to know what's happening too. But if there's even a small chance that keeping it in house, with the fans in the dark, is going to help performances, recruitment, retention or morale in some way, I'm ok with that. But on the other hand it could do none of that and we're all frustrated and left looking for explanations for no reason. Sadly we have no way of knowing which it is. I think this board ends up being split between those who trust that the people in charge have the best interests of the club at heart by keeping it quiet and those who think the people in charge are just looking not to have to deal with the headache of having to explain themselves to supporters.

Thanks for your insight again.

On the recruitment issue, earlier in the season it was said that Nourry, Belk and Cifuentes were involved in signings. I agree the squad is unbalanced but I don't think that's solely down to Nourry, and I'm not a fan of his.

Not ITK but I’d hazard a guess that he’s being told who to play and what system to play them in, despite the players and system we had that produced results and got us out of trouble. Throw in some budget constraints and out of contract issues that probably reduce motivation, it’s a tricky job to succeed in.

"By far the most challenging season of my career!” on 20:02 - Mar 16 with 1902 views | baz_qpr | tbh Unless we were getting promoted or playoffs I've never expected him to be here beyond this season anyway and I would suspect if he does and we do go well he will be poached anyway. Would also be the case if I was Dunne for example I would be waiting to see if Marti is staying before committing to a contract. In terms of the comments they can mean anything, we know Smyth and Cook are still carrying injuries, he's got no forwards, no centre mids. When we have had a full squad we've done well. There could be issues with certain players behind the scenes that we will never know or will only come out in years to come

I think developing a point earlier, it might be around having to play loan signings a certain amount of time as part of loan deal. Just speculating, but that might be forcing to play a certain way/style/approach or pursue certain tactics which really go against where he'd like to be playing. Maybe that was how we were able to afford the loans that we got by agreeing a reduced fee in favour of guaranteed appearances. The idea potentially being we might secure more/higher quality loans in future as well. That might become frustrating as a manager, particularly facing so many likely departures in the summer that will leach experience, quality and presumably leadership qualities on and off the pitch.

I‘m so torn. I don’t like Nourry, because of what he is and what’s he’s done, but why did Marti and Calm sign a new contact if things are so bad? Maybe the issues have started since then? Those comments could go either way. I hope he’s talking about the canteen food.
