The subbing of Freeman. 17:12 - Dec 23 with 7809 viewsSnipper

If Freeman wasn’t injured, what the holy fcuk was Holloway taking him off for?

I honestly can’t stick up for him anymore if Freeman wasn’t injured.

I know we have no bloody money, but we have decent bloody players here, but they just need some proper organisation.

Man for man, Bristol City are no better than us. But before today, they were third in the league and just deservedly beat Man Utd.

It just goes to show what proper organisation can lead to.

Rant over.

Scowen moved forward out of his defensive mid role when Hall came on to a wider position didn't work either. Couldn't get anything going with Smith and Washington. Shame as he'd been fantastic up to then, guess there were worries about his lack of height.

Maybe giving him a rest as we've two more games in six days time.

As it goes I thought the match turned on City's subs more than ours. Putting an ugly great bugger like Flint in the middle of our defence was a good move for them, and one we didn't, or couldn't counter.

I wondered about the Freeman sub at the time, but as someone said upthread, we've got a lot of games coming up and, right now, he has more positive touches in the attacking zone than anyone else in our squad. We simply can't afford to have him go off the boil.

But we're winning this game. Let's see this one out grab 3 points and worry about the other games after.

He truly can’t fcking win can he?

If he left him on there is very little doubt in my mind that people would be whining that he never brought a defender on, as has happened previously.

That game didn’t hinge on the Freeman substitution.

That 1st sentence pretty much sums up his current stint as manager.

The Freeman substitution was godawful, but he only had two options up 1-0 with only 1 sub left: he could have either taken off Freeman or left the sub unused.

There were 10 outfield players he could have subbed off:

-He couldn't take off Baptiste, Robinson, Bidwell or Onohua b/c you don't mess around with your back 4
-He couldn't take off Washington or Smith b/c they were second half subs (though Washington should have been the one replaced)
-He possibly could have taken off Wzolek, but with Smith on, i suppose you want someone to play crosses to Smith

So amongst the midfield three, he could either take off Luongo, Freeman or Scowen. Luongo and Scowen are the more defensive options, so he opted to take off Freeman.

The problem with that was that once Freeman went off, we lost our link between the midfield and the strikers.

The situation was avoidable had Ollie thought one or two steps ahead:

Here's how i would have played out the match:

-bring on Smith for Sylla in the 60th minute. Smith, despite his absolute lack of mobility out of possession, was pretty useful for set pieces and Bristol's lethal Rory Delap throw in. Keep Bright up top or in left wing to pressure Bristol's defines

I would have probably brought on Cousins to pack an extra body in midfield, some pace on the counter, and physicality on set pieces

As the last sub, perhaps Grant Hall for fresh legs to see out the game

I just can't understand why Ollie opted to keep 2 strikers on the pitch up late; would have been nice to have an extra body behind the ball

Maybe but surely you've got to go for the 3 points today then hope for them tomorrow. The 3 points were well and truly there today for us. sh*t substitutions that left us hanging on grateful for point when it shouldnt have been like that.

Samuel was a definite positive for me today. How or why he'd swap him for Conor with so much of the game left was very confusing. I honestly don't know what's going on with that Smith-Washington partnership - at one point it was massively obvious that Smith was going to win the flick. In that situation Conor should know where he's going to play it shirley?! So what happens? Smith angles it diagonally and Conor goes straight, gettig himself lost between 3 defenders. What's the point?

Some of our play down the right side in the first half was outstanding,

Agreed, although rather congested. It did slightly baffle me why we persisted in lumping it up in the air to their giant centre backs when we looked so good playing it on the deck.

I'll be annoyed if BOS doesn't start again @ Ipswich. He deserves a run in the starting line up, he looked more of a handful than Washington does.

But Sylla could fight. Be physical with them. Try to win a few free kicks or put them off.

We put a lot of crosses into the box in the first half and their centre halves won everything...even our goal!

Often centre forwards come up against taller defenders. Sylla was only giving away a couple of inches. He's 3 inches taller than Sir Les.

I like Sylla. I'm not jumping in the guys back. I just think he could have done a LOT more in the first half. Make life harder for the defenders, be more physical and beat someone to a ball into the box.

Even though it went wide, Smith did that in his cameo. He attacked that cross he had no right to win and headed it wide. But he got their through force, something Sylla didn't show today.

I like Sylla. I'd start with him. But I don't he played at all well today.

As I said, and as Desert said, the bigger mistake, by far, was removing Samuel.

I think if you asked City's defence who they found the most difficult to defend against they'd have said Samuel by some way, then Smith because he won some headers and they didn't have it all their own way, then Sylla....and then they'd forget they had a 4th forward to judge.

I watched Sylla closely for the first half he wasn’t even jumping. He was shocking.

All 3 subs were wrong. Particularly the first one, which was wasted (I just can’t have Washington anyway). It was a not only wrong, it meant that he had no choices as to who to bring off for Smith, who had to come on to deal with their long ball aerial bombardment. And Sylla was doing ok, and had been vital at defending corners and free kicks. But who else was he to bring off for Smith? That first sub gave them complete carte blanche without any threat from us, compounded when he then took Freeman off.

I thought it was the right sub but 5 minutes too early.

Big difference between the sides was confidence, we looked like we were hanging on to a 1-0 from about 55 minutes time wasting etc whilst City looked like they knew they would score.

Decent point though against a very good side

I just do not understand how you can think Sylla did well against their backs. He got out fought and won nothing in the air. Twice he brought it down on his chest and laid it off. That was it.

I like Sylla, I do. I'd start him. I just thought he was very poor compared to usual. I don't think he suits a physical match.

The sub that didn't work was Washington for Samuel.

Spot on hunter.

Sylla was poor all game and offered next to nothing. Their CBs established dominance early and Sylla wasn't up for a battle. If he'd stuck at it he would have at least won a few free kicks but he simply did not challenge.

Yet the youngster showed both him & Washington how to play by challenging, running, looking to find players and actually looking like he wasn't terrified of the ball, the opposition & in the case of Washington, his own bloody shadow.

I would have brought on Oteh instead of Washington. I've defended Conor in the past but he is past his sell by date by now. What annoyed me yesterday was the lack of communication with Smith. The times that one of them would press the defenders alone infuriated me. If they close down together they may succeed but alone the defenders just passed it in triangles and it became pointless.

Washington was really poor, felt like patience from fans had run out with him yesterday.

It's Comical how often a ball is played through to him and every time he runs the wrong way so either the defender clears it or the ball hits him on the back of the leg as he runs in the opposite direction

Generally Holloway's substitutions this year have made a positive difference. When they do he has been criticised, often rightly, for not playing those players from the start. So just checking this week, are we saying he got it right from the start?

Completely agree with the OP re Freeman subbing. The only player in the team that can hold up play and give others a breather and stretch the oppo is subbed. Madness (unless he was injured).

Same goes for Washington on for Sylla. Washington barely touched the ball, whereas before Sylla's hold up play was excellent (admittedly less so in the 2nd half). Think we dropped 2 points today through subs and shape change.

Agree about Freeman, but Sylla was woeful - Smith came on for him, Wash came on for BOS.

I think the subbing of Samuel for the out of form and ineffective Washington was a bigger blunder. It made no sense at all.

Why can't we?

Maybe it's down to my age, but we played Francis, Bowles, Masson, Thomas, Givens etc for every minute of a festive program that was just as crowded.

And the pitches were a lot more energy sapping then!

I certainly hope that the back three from yesterday all play in the next three games.

On the World Football phone-in Tim Vickery is always saying that players today cover a lot more ground than they did in the seventies. This is from one of his articles a few years ago:

'According to Brazil's physical preparation specialists, at the time of that great Dutch side, players were running 5,000 metres per game. By the mid 90s this had doubled, and now some players are covering 13,000.'

I think there is a complete over reaction to Sylla's performance. I didn't think he was great but I thought he was ok and improving before he was subbed. He was up against a player who was bigger and more physical than him. Sylla hasn't played many full games and is still learning about English football and adapting to the Championship.

There were people around me who were moaning at every ball that went within about five yards of him. Most of them were, imho, well out of his reach, so is he supposed to jump just to make it look like he is trying?

He can be annoying when he waves his arms around and needs to stay more focused and be a bit braver at times but there were several occasions yesterday when he challenged and fought back for balls that he may have lost the first tackle for.

Of the experienced forwards that we have he is by far the most talented and has the best strike rate. It would be a real disappointment if we can't develop his talent to the point where he is a regular started and scorer.

But we want players who run around and kiss the badge and get the crowd going. Ability has nothing to do with it. Adel shouldn't have played at all as he did not run around.

Back in those days you could also play after a skinful the night before and smoke a cigarette and halftime. Playing at 95% instead of 100% makes a huge difference these days, didn't back then
