Cook/Frey is all about the amount of money they want. In principle I agree keeping them around is preferable (we have seen very clearly that you don’t get that far in this league with a team of European midgets). But, and it’s a big but, Frey’s fitness and availability is poor and I don’t think anyone who has been down there since New Year can tell me Cook’s legs aren’t going going gone.
I would only keep them on pretty heftily reduced wedge, and failing that go out and get a few 28-31 year old experienced pros on frees for cheaper who can play the old head role (assuming we’re not looking for 40 game a season starters here).
Jimmy aside not fussed about the rest. Think Saito will be a very good player one day but unsure if it will be on these shores. |  | | |

Its a worry that so many (key) defenders are OOC. Potentially we need to replace Dunne, Cook, Paal, Edwards and Fox. All starters or at least featuring regularly. And Ashby leaves, so could be 6 defenders gone.
That leaves only injury prone JCS and Morrison who should be on our books. A worrying prospect indeed. I would try to re-sign at least two of the OOC's for some continuity, but it feels like a major defensive rebuild coming up this summer.
I wonder if they have Vale earmarked for LB? And a recall for Larkeche looks like a given also. So perhaps LB covered already in case Paal leaves. Edit: Esquerdinha perhaps also in line for some 1st team experience in that position. [Post edited 18 Mar 11:27]

Overseas clubs can start talking to players that are going out of contract from January.
I'm not sure if English clubs can offer a pre contract presently, or if they have to wait until the contract expires. |  | | |

I would imagine that contracts will be offered to Cook, Dunne, Frey and maybe Fox.
I'd be surprised if we retain any of the others.
I suppose you have two left backs here already for next season in the shape of Vale and Larkeche. Morrison and JCS your starting CB's I guess.

You have to trust that the people running the club know more than we do, but I find the current situation with Dunne bizarre.
He's gone out of his way to say he's happy here and wants to stay. He's been one of our most consistent and popular players for the last few years, and an obvious choice to take over as captain if we don't renew Cook's contract. He's only 27 so you could conceivably give him a long-ish renewal and still sell him for a decent fee in a year or two. He covers two positions and has a very decent injury record, which potentially means one less senior player on the wage bill. I know we're operating on a budget but surely, surely there's enough money to make sure that one of our most important players doesn't walk away for nothing?
Even if he was in and out of the team until Marti moved him to right back, I find it completely baffling that we didn't treat his contract as a priority in the summer (imagine not signing Santos, and instead adding those costs onto what we could offer Jimmy). The fact he was seemingly willing to go in January makes me worry that he's said he won't renew, but if that's the case then surely you'd be looking for reasons to give other players more minutes, and not putting him front and centre of the club's marketing.
Everyone else I can take or leave - I'd personally renew Paal and Frey if given the option, sign Saito if possible, and release the others - but surely Dunne is the one guy we should be moving heaven and earth to keep. [Post edited 18 Mar 17:16]

Dunne is hoping for a much improved wages elsewhere, which could be possible as he would be a free, but would be a sideways move if he did.
Paal - does he want to go back home. He is reasonable enough. Ideally for me, he would be the reserve left back though in the squad.
We have no hope of signing Edwards but I would offer terms but it's just never happening sadly.
