Charles's gambit 08:58 - Oct 15 with 4000 viewsLogman

What did people think of the near on minute that Charles put his foot on the ball outside the box inviting Derby on.

I've never seen anything like it - I thought the ref was going to blow for a re-start

I thought he should have gone long because we didn't really gain anything from when he finally played across to Jimmy at right centre back

It's difficult to see how you counter him. It's damned if you press him and damned if you don't. He'll probably make a mistake or two when being aggressively pressed, but apart from that, he's got all the cards.

we were saying over our half time bevs, he is game breakingly good

Don't want to rain on everyone's parade, but other teams will be studying him very closely for weaknesses so will be interesting to see how he gets on 2nd half of the season. Especially against teams with a full on neanderthal approach like Millwall.

This is a really good point. First half of the season Nardi looked what he was - a very competent shot-stopper, but not too hot on crosses. By the time the reverse fixtures came around every team was raining crosses on him and he looked very average indeed.
Charles of course is a far better keeper than Nardi, but it will be interesting to see what different strategies he will face and how he will cope in the 2nd half of the season

All we have to do is win the FA Cup, easy, right? Oh and get a cut price deal from Man City to sign him on a 10 year contract. I'm in.

Let's have a whip round. What a top-tier player

Managers will have been studying him already, Eustace would have done, Nuno would have done and nobody has sussed the best way to counter. As one manager said, can’t recall who, it is like having an extra player on the pitch at times. But he isn’t the only one whose passing has improved the team, the whole of the defence has become so much more competent with their passing, as passing first time without the faff of controlling the ball first. It is becoming a real joy to watch.

I'd imagine you're right.
Advance scouting would have picked him out in five minutes and there's so much video of even pre-season games now.

I said a few weeks ago that it wouldn’t surprise me to see a player dedicated to marking Charles in some circumstances. It would leave the opposition a player short elsewhere on the pitch but who would the opposition rather see playing an out ball - Charles or Jimmy Dunne? It would be unprecedented but for a 10 or 15 minute experiment during a game it might be effective as so many of our attacking opportunities begin with Charles.

Poll: Julian Stepháne…stick or twist

It was hilarious.

Teams are genuinely frightened to approach him as it’ll leave one man free and they know he’ll find them.

Never seen anything quite like this fella.

Exactly what we were saying.

Haven't seen it before, in a non time wasting way anyway.

And it worked. Waitied for them to break their shape, simple pass and a few more passes later we scored. Perfect.

He’s destined to be a Top Top Keeper, has it all. Like many I was a little worried after the Millwall game, and thought teams would target him with crosses. Such a confident player and like having an extra outfield player at times.
Hopefully City getting relegated to the national league and have a fire sale. 🤞🏻
In the meantime Let’s Enjoy him while he’s ours

Agreed. Although, if we're not allowed to pass to him in our half, that might be a problem.

"I thought he should have gone long because we didn't really gain anything from when he finally played across to Jimmy at right centre back."

It started the move that led to the first goal.

He broke the line, not across too. Move is here. It's clearly heavily rehearsed to break low blocks. He's a 21 year old on loan, he's not got carte blanche to play jazz at 0-0. Everyone knew where they were meant to go, ball was always coming back to either Ronnie or Charles to go left long:

Derby blinked first on that one and we scored almost straight away. Szmodics was absolutely steaming with somebody.

With Fuseni and particularly Ward, both of whom Kember breezed by as if they were Marcin Kus and Zesh Rehman. It was incredible defending, if we'd conceded like that this board would be in flames.

Can’t immediately bring to mind the name of the fella who does the ‘deep dive’ tactical analysis stuff for LFW, but would love to get his insight into Pierce’s technique (apologies in advance if it’s already been done and I’ve somehow managed to miss it!)

I'll try and tee something up for the international break mate.

I was thinking just that when he came close to our side - looks like an ex-boxer who's stopped training.

I think he is absolutely brilliant and yes the opposition know what he is trying to do but not much they can do about it

He literally gives us a player advantage

Other teams may copy at some point but with a normal keeper it will lead to more issues than benefits

I really like what he brings to QPR. I know will all be over soon so lets enjoy it while we can

For me, the best thing about this was how clearly it demonstrated the patterns of play. There were times when we could break the lines if the space was there, or float one over the top. Charles' passing range allows this but the team also looks so well drilled!

I had a great view from the upper loft, and Edwards’ movement was clearly rehearsed. It came from patience, Morris grew frustrated and started creeping towards Charles, while Edwards moved further around the back into Morris’ blindside. When Morris eventually pressed, Ronnie was essentially a 4th midfielder.

As the goals went in during the first half, Derby became increasingly frustrated (particularly Morris), pressed more rashly and regularly broke their lines. That exact movement happened 3 or 4 times. By the final one, Morris even looked over his shoulder as if to say, “Where the hell did Edwards go?”
