Take the money. He adds nothing going forward and while his positional play is good, he seems prone to a loss of concentration. And we have Haydn and Sam as defensive mids.

I like Varane and think he's a good player. Rarely heard him get stick at games compared to the abuse on here.
Of course he has things to improve, but that is capable of happening, right?
I can see why clubs would go after him. I can also understand why we would sell. If he goes I don't think he will be amazing, but I bet he has a very decent career.
Well said mate. Seems popular with the younger fans too and is genuinely a good lad it seems. Doesn’t deserve a song apparently though 😂

This is a bit of a straw man. Around me, Pu, there are quite a few who don’t rate Varane. Against Wednesday there were audible groans around the ground when he did his slow 4 touch 360 turn before laying it off backwards a couple of times. The Varane song also died a death when it was started up. It’s hardly a case he’s loved at the ground and hated on here. Some people, as is evidenced in this thread like him. And he has played some great games. But his form at the minute isn’t good. He doesn’t seem to be improving at all.
Equally, lots of astute posters on here really rate Kolli. Again, don’t think it’s the case at all that he gets bashed on here but loved in the ground. I think he’s pretty popular on here. Most want to see him given a run now Burrell is injured.
£5m is a great price for a central midfielder we paid c. £1m for 18 months ago, who isn’t showing any signs of improving this season. Field is better than Varane defensively, certainly tracks runners far better, and breaks up play better IMO. We also have Hayden who can play there. Selling won’t weaken the side and we need to sell to make this Player Trading/Amortisation model work. It is what it is. We’ll have to sell regularly.
I'm more keen on Varane than most I think and I agree with this. 5-6m is still good money, especially with a little sell-on to cover our bases in case he really kicks on.

I have no problem with Varane apart from the almost perpetual reverse gear. He seems like a good lad, puts in lots of effort, breaks up play etc, but so does Hayden and I wonder if we really need both. If they offer proper money, ie anything north of five large, I think we have to go for it. I feel no emotional attachment and if it helps fund handsome Ronnie plus a proper full back so be it.

Am truly not sure why this guy gets so much stick.
We got practically all good eggs in our squad now and have not seen any troublesome vibes from Varane. He does seem to want to play well for the team and has some qualities, for sure.
For me he has been decent and no real issues for me. Only problem, i do wish he would think about a forward pass as its very rare he tries this. Am sure such failings can be ironed out and i think it has worked fine with Madsen.
i do believe some fans will always have one boo boy and i think Varane is the one they want to have a go at. He has been fine for me.
£6million, i would hold out for. If its only £5.2million, I personally would play hard ball, and am sure we could get £6 million in the summer.
What I would say though is, with Edwards coming in, I could see him playing this role at some point and others have said with Morgan, Field and Hayden to, its not as if this role is without cover.
Feel all the nastiness though on here against Varane is very odd. Certainly doesnt deserve boo boy status at all
If anyone is offering 6M for Varane, it’s certainly not sterling - Rupees maybe

If we’d seen him driving forward Yaya style swatting off defenders like peasants and being integral to our play each week, then Id hold out for more. Seems a nice lad but I think we’ve seen enough to know £5m is a hard yes ok if you insist, we accept.
Field can do the same job while adding left footed balance and it frees up a spot for another to develop + subsidises Ronnie. Makes sense. Get it done (if its as clean as that).
Conservative assumptions: £1m purchase, £5m sale Profit = £4m Sell on clause = 25% of profit > £1m paid to Gijon Approx. net profit = £3m

I'm not 100% as I feel there might be more to come from him but think I would go with this as long as we get a sell-on of 20% or so.

Maybe Varane gets so much stick on this forum because of his name. Sure Jobe Bellingham could offer some nuggets of help to overcome such a situation.
If his name was Smith, Jones or Field, do think he would not get much criticism at all.
Just a thought of mine.....

Really now your getting into the realms of fantasy, Varane has been prioritised from the start of the season because he is at the right age to get a decent fee providing he is playing in the team and not on the bench.
We have two other defensive midfielders who do exactly the same job and it's all about buying improving and then moving them on for a profit, I'm definitely in the camp we should sell providing we get a decent fee.

I think everyone seems to be in the “sell” camp at 5-6m. The difference seems to be where people think he’s any good or not.

Yup I get all that I'm in the camp that Varane is not better than Field so we can afford to let him go, that doesn't mean I don't rate Varane as a purely defensive midfielder.

Completely agree with this, good player but nothing really special. If the terms of the deal are ok then let him go, there is adequate cover in his DM position & need to take the profit if we can.
The move may suit him, back to France & St Etienne currently 4th in Ligue 2, probably not as intense as the Championship.
Good luck to him if he goes..

I agree with the poster above; I think it`s the intensity of the play in England that highlights his weaknesses. It`s so frustrating because when he gets (enough) time on the ball, his passing epsecially is top notch imo.

I don't love him, I don't dislike him. He does a job and although it's very negative/conservative in his passing, he rarely shirks. He also seems like a good egg, but we've also got Sam Field who I think all those things apply to, with Hayden in line as well.
If we're making a 300-400% profit on Varane then I think it's a no-trainer to move him on with thanks and best wishes
Shit but local

It’s a massive complement to him and Madsen that we aren’t constantly talking about them being outmanoevered by midfield 3’s. I don’t think he’s hit the heights of last season, but he’s still a starter for me so by selling him weakens the team.
That said he was widely linked with half of Europe over the summer so either him/his agent want a move or we’ve lined him up as our next good money sell. Half wondered whether his form this year might be linked to him not getting that Summer move.
Either way I’d guess he’ll be off, but I think we will miss him.
If not actually disgruntled, he was far from being gruntled. PG Wodehouse
In the land of the blind, the one eyed man is king. Varane is average to middling. He's made to look better than he really is by the paucity of options we have in central midfield.
The cold reality is that £5-6 million is good money for a player with limited ability who is unlikely to play at a higher level or command a bigger fee. Moreover, there's no guarantee Varane will extend his contract in future so you risk ultimately losing the player for nothing.
What I would say is that if he is to be sold it must be permanent. I'm uncomfortable with the idea of a loan with a view to buy because of the risk of injury during the loan spell.

This is exactly how I see it too, Punk R. He’s fine and seems like a decent lad. He does some great things and irritating things in equal measure. If he was as good as some people make out he wouldn’t be at QPR nor would he have probably declared for Martinique internationallyz
A historic giant of French football have bid on him, he’ll also feel the pull.
We have adequate cover for him, take the money which is a sizeable profit and reinvest or apportion to Ronnie Edwards transfer.

As Clive Allen’s brother Woody said . Take the money and run . Good business if it comes off and we have good cover as Hayden proved today.
Didn’t miss him atall today Hadyn had an excellent game esp considering he’s hardly played for some reason tracked back got forward excellent performance from him
If we can sell an injured Varane for around £5m let's think about how much we could get for all the other players now in the treatment room who can't walk?
