1. The link up between Madsen and Vale was excellent and a shout out for Bennie, who seemed to act as the water carrier between them on occasion. That triangle seemed to work very well and was far more creative.

Scary thing is that he's probably still finding his feet having not been a regular since October. Clear to see why he was so highly rated in the academy days, his technical ability is top, creativity and linkup today was great. Had a couple of good games earlier in the season too before fading then getting injured. So the key now is to maintain this consistency. He definitely isn't a winger, but he's showing he is very good in the number 10 role. He reads the game well, has good vision and you can really see that top academy background. That was the biggest thing for him; actually completing the full game.
He is so much more effective in the centre of the pitch, rather than stuck out wide. I'm sure when he joined JS said he would be used as a CM or 10.

I'm another who is impressed with Vale. Technically very good and an intelligent player who understands the game a little differently from others. What he lacks in pace, he makes up for in skill.
And as others have pointed out, he will only get better as he gets games under his belt. |  | | |

My main takeaway is that overall I just prefer us in the 4231 formation than with two up top. It just links our play and makes midfield so much more complete.
I also think we’ve got a few good potential 10s in the squad.
Vale may be beat. Certainly his technique and accurate use of the ball in possession makes a big difference, especially for other technicians like Madsen. |  |

That was where Vale should play, he was excellent. That was where Kone should play, he was excellent. Those two playing where they should play, with Hayden sweeping up, allowed Madsen to have a bit of a wander and guess what, you get a perfect pass into the box the centre forward so rarely receives.

The club clearly saw him as potentially special, because signing a player, who won't be able to play for half a season is a statement in itself.
Hope for two things;
1. He maintains this form.
2. He is not another crock.
Anyone that can score the goal he did last week, clearly has class.

Yeah, good to have options, but ideally Chair-Vale-Poku behind Kone or Burrell looks a lot more balanced than constantly trying to hit channels and turn the opposition with 2 up front.
Hard to tell if it took the unfortunate injury to Burrell for the change to happen but I think it's worth sticking with.
Vale being able to hit a quality pass early from an advanced position is something we've been in need of for a while. [Post edited 1 Feb 9:21]

Agree with this but it also gives us options when more players (Chair, Burrell, Poku) are fit. Some games will suit 4231 more and some games will suit 442. It will be interesting to see what line up and formation JS goes with at Charlton on Friday, particularly if Dembele is out for a while. |  |

It would depend on the formation. If we revert back to 442 I can see Vale dropped to the bench but in a 4231 he's arguably the best option in the middle of the 3. | | | |
